Multipurpose building in Almazán (Soria)
The Arboleda Park in Almazán, on the banks of the Duero River, served as both the setting and the inspiration for the project. This lush natural environment called for a careful dialogue between the built structure and the surrounding vegetation. The solution was a cross-laminated timber building set on a concrete foundation: two volumes of different scales, bold in their geometry, yet light in their materials.
The City Council designed the program as part of its Agri-Food Fair: a main space of 1,350 m² for exhibitions, conferences, and forums, and an auxiliary space for services and access. Sustainability considerations and the site’s characteristics led to the choice of wood as the primary material, both structurally and visually.
The proposal introduces a precisely geometric form into a soft landscape. This contrast between the hardness of the form and the softness of the surroundings is the defining element of the project. The concrete base anchors the building to the ground; above it, the wooden structure of thin slats appears lighter, adhering to the base through a contrast of weight and texture. The roof, constructed with tensioned slabs, completes the structural design of the complex.
The laminated timber structure was designed and engineered in collaboration with engineer Miguel Ángel Rodríguez Nevado.

Highlights
Wood along the banks of the Duero River
At Parque de la Arboleda, wood was the obvious choice: the material that allowed the building to interact with its surroundings without sacrificing a strong presence.
Hard Geometry, Soft Landscape
The building’s geometric precision and the park’s organic nature contrast with and complement each other, lending the complex a distinctive character that makes it instantly recognizable.
Two scales, one language
The main building and the service wing coexist as structures of different sizes but with the same design philosophy, fulfilling the program’s requirements with clarity and efficiency.
